The Route

Day 1: Welcome to Graubünden – from Oberalp to Thusis
85 km | 760 mD+
Did you know that the Rhine has two sources? Today we’ll be descending the Vorderrhein from the summit of the Oberalp Pass, on the border with Graubünden.
Leaving Oberalp at midday, a gentle descent awaits us. On the way, we cross the Rhine Gorge, the “Swiss Grand Canyon”.
Our long but beautiful descent ends in the picturesque town of Bonaduz, where we leave the Vorrderhein to begin the gentle ascent of the Hinterrhein towards Thusis, where we will spend the night.

Day 2: Viamala and Splügen Pass
76 km | 1960 mD+
The most difficult day, but also the most rewarding. We start the day with another incredible gorge in Graubünden and the famous road that crosses it, the Viamala.
Even after crossing this spectacular stretch, the constantly changing landscape along the gradual climb to the village of Splügen never disappoints.
After a light lunch in Splügen, the big climb to the pass of the same name begins. We quickly leave the village via a series of magnificent switchbacks.
If you’ve never climbed the Splügen Pass, you’re in for a treat. Its perfect twists and turns, surrounded by pristine Alpine scenery, are the stuff of fantasy.
Once we’ve reached the summit and the Italian border, it’s a 30-kilometer descent to Val Bregaglia. A few kilometers further on, we cross back into Switzerland and reach our hotel for the night.

Day 3: The Maloja Pass and the Upper Engadine
43 km | 1300 mD+
We start our day in Val Bregaglia, just a few kilometers from the Italian border. If we were to descend, we would arrive on the north shore of Lake Como. But we’re not descending, we’re climbing; towards the magnificent Engadine!
We start the day with a gentle climb along the river. If you look up, you’ll see many villages perched on the mountainsides all around us, seemingly frozen in time.
The last few kilometers take us into the Engadine via the famous switchbacks of the Maloja Pass. After a lakeside lunch, we continue on to Celerina via the famous resort of St Moritz.

Day 4: Las Ciclistas Bike Festival
Today is the day we’ve been waiting for, and the reason for our expedition to Graubünden: to take part in the first edition of the Las Ciclistas bike festival!
You can choose your program. Do you want to test your technical skills and join a group in mountain biking paradise? Or would you prefer to stay on the road and join Cycling Heidi or another guide to explore some of the region’s famous passes? Or perhaps you’d simply prefer a day off to admire the glaciers or discover the surrounding villages on foot?
Whatever you choose to do during the day, meet up at 16h to take part in the festival’s evening activities. More information on the Ciclistas website.

Day 5: Albula Pass
50 km | 740 mD+
All good things must come to an end, as is unfortunately the case with our trip. But not before conquering one last mythical pass in Graubünden: The Albula Pass.
Leaving Celerina, we start with a gentle descent to the foot of the Albula. Our 700-metre ascent begins in the village of Punt Chamues-ch, and after a few turns we are quickly into alpine pastures.
Once over the summit, you’ll be blown away by the scenery as we descend one of the most beautiful passes in the Alps. We’ll finish our tour in Tiefencastel, where we’ll catch a train back to Thusis and head home.
